چکیده

Introduction: The main pathologic feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) is the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) [1]. There is increasing evidence that iron-mediated oxidative stress via the Fenton reaction is responsible for this loss of neurons [2]. Iron's paramagnetism leads to changes in the relaxation rates R1, R2 and R2* [3] and the phase of susceptibility weighted images (SWI) [3,4]. While R2* has been previously used to assess iron deposition in the SNc in PD [5], the advantage of phase is that it is independent of relaxation mechanisms and has a higher signal to noise ratio (SNR). The aim of this study was therefore to use multi echo SWI for the investigation of both phase and R2* relaxation in deep brain structures of patients with PD.

Diagnosis of patients with Parkinson's disease using quantitative susceptibility mapping

Introduction: Parkinson'sdisease isassociated withirondeposition in the brain. The T2-weighted imaging, T2* mapping, R2 mapping and Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) are three common methods to evaluating the iron deposition in brain. Among three methods the QSM is more sensitive than others. Few studies have been used QSM for evaluating the iron deposition in the basa...

The evaluation of iron content in Alzheimer’s disease by magnetic resonance imaging: Phase and R2* methods

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the best imaging examination to evaluate abnormal iron deposition in the brain. Although phase of susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) and R2 values have been used to probe iron deposition in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain, no study has exploited both techniques for quantification of iron deposition in AD. Purpose: Use phase and R2 to evaluate ir...

Untangling the R2* contrast in multiple sclerosis: A combined MRI-histology study at 7.0 Tesla

T2*-weighted multi-echo gradient-echo magnetic resonance imaging and its reciprocal R2* are used in brain imaging due to their sensitivity to iron content. In patients with multiple sclerosis who display pathological alterations in iron and myelin contents, the use of R2* may offer a unique way to untangle mechanisms of disease. Coronal slices from 8 brains of deceased multiple sclerosis patien...
